How to Change a Slide's Layout in Google Slides

Short Answer

How do you change a slide's layout in Google Slides?

Select the slide, click Layout in the toolbar at the top, and choose the layout you want. Slide › Apply layout does the same. With the ShortieCuts extension, you can also press Alt (Option on Mac), then H L.

In ShortieCuts' key-tip menu: Home › Slide Layout. On a Mac, press Option instead of Alt.

Using the Menus

  1. Select the slide.
  2. At the top, click Layout (or Slide › Apply layout).
  3. Select the layout you want to use.

Google's keyboard shortcut list for Google Slides has no shortcut for this.

The PowerPoint-Style ALT Shortcut

  1. Add the ShortieCuts extension to Chrome and open any Google Slides presentation.
  2. In the panel on the left, click the slide you want to change.
  3. Press Alt (or Option on Mac). PowerPoint-style key-tips appear.
  4. Press H, then L. ShortieCuts runs “Slide Layout”.

When the ALT route helps: Alt, H, L is the Layout key-tip on PowerPoint's Home tab, so it's the one to try first if you're coming from PowerPoint.

FAQ

Is there a keyboard shortcut to change a slide's layout in Google Slides?

Google's keyboard shortcut list for Google Slides doesn't include one. Select the slide, click Layout in the toolbar at the top, and choose the layout you want. Slide › Apply layout does the same. With the ShortieCuts extension, you can also press Alt (Option on Mac), then H, then L.

Does Alt + H + L work in Google Slides?

Not on its own. Google Slides has no ribbon key-tips, so typing Alt + H + L there won't change a slide's layout. With the ShortieCuts Chrome extension installed, press Alt (Option on Mac), then H, then L, and ShortieCuts runs its "Slide Layout" command.

How do I change a slide's layout in Google Slides on a Mac?

The steps above work the same way on a Mac. With ShortieCuts, press Option instead of Alt, then H, then L.

Is ShortieCuts free?

ShortieCuts has a free 14-day trial with no credit card needed. After the trial, Pro is $7.99 a month or $69.99 a year.
