Short Answer

Can you use PowerPoint shortcuts in Google Slides?

Yes, with the ShortieCuts Chrome extension. Google Slides has no ribbon, so PowerPoint's Alt sequences do nothing on their own. With ShortieCuts, press Alt (Option on Mac) in a presentation, then type the letters you would in PowerPoint, for example HI for New Slide, DD for Duplicate Slide or AAC for Align Center. All 148 supported sequences are listed below.

FAQ

Can you use PowerPoint shortcuts in Google Slides?

Not PowerPoint's Alt shortcuts on their own: Google Slides has no ribbon, so the Alt key-tips do nothing. With the ShortieCuts Chrome extension, press Alt (Option on Mac) in a presentation and PowerPoint-style key-tips appear, so sequences such as Alt + H + I (New Slide), Alt + D + D (Duplicate Slide), Alt + A + A + C (Align Center) work as they do in PowerPoint. ShortieCuts supports 148 of them in Google Slides.

Does Google Slides have its own keyboard shortcuts?

Yes. Google Slides has its own Ctrl shortcuts (Cmd on Mac); press Ctrl + / to see the full list. Alt + / (Option + / on Mac) opens Search the menus, where you type a command name. Common keys such as Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V, Ctrl + Z and Ctrl + B work as in PowerPoint, but PowerPoint's Alt ribbon sequences are not supported without an extension.

Do the PowerPoint shortcuts work on a Mac?

Yes. With ShortieCuts, press Option instead of Alt to bring up the key-tips, then type the same letters.

Is the same extension used for Google Sheets, Slides and Docs?

Yes. One ShortieCuts install covers Excel shortcuts in Google Sheets, PowerPoint shortcuts in Google Slides and Word shortcuts in Google Docs. It has a free 14-day trial with no credit card, then $7.99 a month or $69.99 a year.
