Excel Shortcuts in Google Sheets

The 233 Excel ALT key sequences ShortieCuts brings to Google Sheets. Press Alt (Option on Mac) in a sheet and the same key-tips you know from Excel appear. Plus Excel's Ctrl shortcuts, including Trace Precedents and Dependents.

Short Answer

Can you use Excel Alt shortcuts in Google Sheets?

Yes, with the ShortieCuts Chrome extension. Google Sheets has no ribbon, so Excel's Alt sequences do nothing on their own. With ShortieCuts, press Alt (Option on Mac) in a sheet, then type the same letters as in Excel: for example H O I to autofit column width or H V V to paste values. All 233 supported sequences are listed below.

FAQ

Can you use Excel Alt shortcuts in Google Sheets?

Not on their own. Google Sheets has no ribbon, so Excel's Alt key-tips do nothing there. With the ShortieCuts Chrome extension, press Alt (Option on Mac) in a sheet and Excel-style key-tips appear; type the same letters you would in Excel. ShortieCuts supports 233 Alt sequences.

Does Google Sheets support any Excel keyboard shortcuts natively?

Yes, the basic ones. Copy, paste, undo, bold and Ctrl + arrow navigation work as in Excel, and Help > Keyboard shortcuts has an "Enable compatible spreadsheet shortcuts" switch that adds more Excel-style Ctrl and Shift shortcuts. None of these cover Excel's Alt ribbon sequences such as Alt + H + O + I or Alt + E + S + V.

Is there a built-in way to reach Google Sheets menus from the keyboard?

Yes. Alt + / (Option + / on Mac) opens Search the menus, where you type a command name, and Ctrl + / (Cmd + / on Mac) lists Google's own shortcuts. These work without an extension, but they are different keys from Excel's.

Do the Excel Alt shortcuts work on a Mac?

Yes. With ShortieCuts, press Option instead of Alt to bring up the key-tips, then type the same letters. The trace shortcuts use the Control key.

How much does ShortieCuts cost?

There is a free 14-day trial with no credit card. After that, Pro is $7.99 a month or $69.99 a year, with automatic volume discounts for teams.
